There have been talks over the years about projects that would tell the story of the fictional Overlook Hotel from The Shining, including a prequel film that was at one point going to be directed by Mark Romanek, and the latest is an HBO Max series that was just announced today by Variety. HBO Max and J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot are teaming on a series titled “Overlook.”
The site notes that HBO Max has handed out a production commitment to the one-hour drama, described as “a horror-thriller that explores the untold stories of the Overlook Hotel.”
Abrams will produce “Overlook” alongside Ben Stephenson and Rachel Rusch Rich. Abrams has recently been playing around in Stephen King’s world through Hulu’s “Castle Rock.”
“Overlook” hails from Warner Brothers Television and it comes in the direct wake of last year’s Mike Flanagan-directed sequel to The Shining, Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep.
