He’s been not so subtly teasing it for a while but today Sylvester Stallone has officially announced the “Rocky IV” director’s cut as being on the way for the film’s 35th anniversary this year.
Stallone, who starred in and directed the 1985 original, says of the new cut “So far it looks great. soulful” and thanks “MGM for this opportunity to entertain”. Stallone has often been quite honest in his assessment of the past “Rocky” films which suggests potential.
Responding to fans on his Instagram page, he did reveal one key character from the existing theatrical cut is being removed – the six-foot talking robot that Rocky gives his brother-in-law Paulie.
How the Screen Actors Guild will feel about this is unclear as the actual robot, dubbed ‘SICO’ and created by International Robotics Inc., was a member if the actors union and even toured with James Brown at one point.
Stallone says: “the robot is going to the junkyard forever, no more robot… I don’t like the robot anymore.” No word on a potential release date for the new cut.
